The September Equinox

The September Equinox

September Equinox

Friday, September 22, 2017, marks the September Equinox; Autumnal for the Northern Hemisphere and Spring for Southern. As I reside in the area that uses the CDT (Central) time zone, we are expecting the happening at 3:02 P.M. You can estimate your own based on 20:02 UTC, or use this handy map:

The world is divided up into about 24 time zones.

While there are many websites one can gather information about this event all across the web, I have chosen earthsky.org for the inspiration of this post. In her article, Deborah Byrd has given some very interesting facts concerning the event.

As usual, while exploring the page I’m using for reference, as well as other sites brought up in the Google search, I learned some interesting facts. Did you know that the ancient Incan Empire built a device to track the solstices? Called the Intihuatana Stone, which translates to “hitching post of the sun,” built somewhere around c. 1450–1540, and located on Machu Picchu, they used it for astronomical purposes as well as spiritual and religious ceremonies.

For more information from sources much more reliable than yours truly, make sure you follow the links I’ve posted, or you can conduct your own search. Either way, there’s a wealth of info to be found.

In conclusion, I’ll leave you with Deborah’s sign-off: “Enjoy the 2017 equinox – a seasonal signpost in Earth’s orbit around the sun!” Remember to add a comment below with your experiences of this or a previous equinox, or share this on your favorite Social Media platform.
