Gutenberg Editor- Denied!

Gutenberg Editor- Denied!

So, this is just a rant-style post.

Recently, WordPress has deemed it necessary to force upon those of us who use it a new editor to make posts called Gutenberg. I’ve seen it as an option before, even tried to make the switch, but it did not make much sense to me. Maybe I just didn’t want to learn how to use it, but I changed back to the classic editor and have been satisfied with it.

With the most recent update, Gutenberg was thrust upon me with no warning and no way to opt out of it.

Now, there is a way to download the Classic Editor and install it manually. I don’t know how to do that, either. Maybe it’s the same as trying to learn a new way to do what I’ve had no trouble doing with the old way; I just don’t want to learn how, or don’t want to spend the time it takes to learn how. Whatever- I want to keep the old version without having to jump through hoops to do so.

Instead of hashing out in my own words, which would be woefully inadequate, I’ll share with you the link to the post that brings up this whole debacle. I subscribe to blog updates from Nicholas Rosis and have for many years now. It was on his suggestion, in fact, that I decided to get a website through WordPress in the first place. Here’s his link, though he actually re-posted it from another site: Hello, Gutenberg… (should open in a new tab).

I found, when I tried to follow the instructions, that what I saw on their screenshots was not what I saw on my dashboard. I hate when that happens, for it’s not the first time my site didn’t match whatever tutorial I attempted to follow. I did finally get through it by going to my Plugins menu, clicking on “Add New,” and finding there the Classic Editor to install. Still took me a couple of tries to get it installed, but I’m happy to announce that I have successfully returned my settings to the way I can work with them.

Am I the only one who gets frustrated when the Powers That (May) Be force crud on me when I’m doing just fine without the newest gadget or update? Am I the only one who is just not tech-savvy enough to instantly grasp new concepts?

“Aw, Ma, do I have to?” The answer this time, for now anyway, is “No, you don’t have to.”

  1. I’m glad you sorted it out, John, and thanks for the kind shoutout!

Dona, if you’re not self-hosting, you should be fine. Even if you are, just follow John’s instructions or go to your plugins page, click Add New, click on Classic Editor (it should be available but if not, just search for it), Install, and Activate. That should restore everything to the way it used to be.

    Hope this helps 🙂

  2. Hi, John. Thanks for the info. I may try your way. If WP gives me too much trouble, I’ll just leave. Standard Pisces MO. I love change and have no problem adjusting but I don’t have time to play.
